What the rating means, and what it asks of the vehicle.

Every build is engineered to a ballistic protection level, using EN 1063-rated glass and NIJ-rated opaque armor. This page is the protection itself: the levels, the weapon classes, the materials, and what each one does to weight and handling.

01 / Protection levels

Choose your level.

The EN 1063 and NIJ levels Baldwin Armor builds to, each shown with the weapon class and the reference ammunition it is certified against. Open any level for its full ballistic specification.

Protection levels are published here as they are confirmed. Contact us for the levels currently offered.

02 / Protection in detail

Two levels, two different threats.

BR4 and BR6 are not steps on one scale: each is engineered for a different threat profile. What each level is rated for, who it is built for, and what it asks of the vehicle.

BR4 / NIJ IIIA

Handgun and shotgun

Rated for
Designed for common handgun threats: 9mm, .44 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .38 Special, plus shotgun.
Who it is for
Ideal for everyday civilian protection against common street level threats, carjackings, smash and grab, forced entry attempts, and handgun attacks, while maintaining the vehicle's everyday drivability, comfort, and performance. BR4 provides meaningful protection without the significant weight and vehicle modifications associated with higher level rifle armor.
Common misconception
BR4 is serious ballistic protection, but it is not rifle rated. Higher velocity rifle threats require a higher protection level.

BR6 / NIJ III

Rifle

Rated for
Designed for high powered rifle threats: .223/5.56x45, .308 Win FMJ, 7.62x39, 7.62x51 M80, AK-47.
Who it is for
Designed for clients facing elevated or targeted threats who require rifle level protection without the appearance of a traditionally armored vehicle. BR6 provides significantly higher ballistic protection while maintaining a sleek, discreet exterior, refined interior, and near OEM appearance.
Common misconception
Rifle rated does not mean every rifle round. Ammunition type, construction, and velocity matter, so protection should always be matched to the specific threat.

Weight and handling

BR4

Our lightweight BR4 protection is engineered to minimize the impact on vehicle weight and everyday drivability. Depending on the vehicle and selected coverage, a typical BR4 build adds approximately 180 to 450 pounds, comparable to carrying a few additional passengers and luggage. The result is a remarkably subtle transformation. The vehicle retains the expected comfort, appearance, performance, and usability for everyday driving while providing an added layer of protection that remains virtually undetectable.

BR6

BR6 represents a significant step up in protection, engineered for higher level rifle threats that require an entirely different approach to vehicle armoring. Thicker certified ballistic glass, steel armor, and expanded coverage create a substantially more robust protective system than our lightweight BR4 builds. Each vehicle is evaluated as a complete system, with careful consideration given to payload, braking, suspension, handling, and overall vehicle dynamics. Supporting components are upgraded where required. The objective is not simply to add armor, but to properly integrate a higher level of protection while maintaining safe, stable, and predictable vehicle performance.

03 / Materials

The Falcon line.

The Falcon line is Baldwin Armor's family of ballistic materials: glass, woven armor, composite, and steel, each certified, each selected for where and how it protects.

FalconForm

Superior ultra lightweight woven ballistic protection. Advanced aramid armor engineered to deliver proven ballistic performance with significant weight reduction compared to traditional steel.

Packages

Coverage first, then the level.

Baldwin Armor sells three directional coverage families, offered at five trims. Where the protection sits is the first choice, and the certified level is the second. The packages page lists each family with its starting-at pricing by vehicle category.
